This hackathon challenges developers, students, and innovators to use Python to tackle real-world environmental and sustainability problems. Build software that helps reduce waste, conserve resources, monitor environmental conditions, improve energy efficiency, protect ecosystems, or help people make more sustainable decisions.

Your project can use AI, data science, computer vision, IoT, automation, APIs, simulations, dashboards, or any other Python-powered technology. We want to see practical ideas that turn code and data into measurable environmental impact.

What can you build?

Your project might:

  • Reduce, identify, or manage waste

  • Track or reduce carbon emissions

  • Improve energy efficiency

  • Monitor and conserve water

  • Protect forests, wildlife, or ecosystems

  • Encourage sustainable transportation

  • Monitor pollution and environmental conditions

  • Use AI to solve an environmental problem

  • Analyze environmental datasets and uncover useful insights

  • Use Python with sensors or IoT devices

  • Simulate environmental systems or predict environmental risks

  • Create an entirely new solution to a sustainability challenge

Requirements

Submission Requirements

To participate, submit a working project that uses Python as a meaningful part of the solution and addresses an environmental or sustainability-related problem.

Your Devpost submission must include:

1. Project Description

Explain:

  • What environmental problem you are addressing

  • Why the problem matters

  • How your solution works

  • Who would benefit from it

  • How your project could create environmental impact

2. Python Usage

Clearly explain how Python is used in your project.

Python should play a meaningful technical role in the solution rather than being included only as a minor component.

Examples include:

  • Python applications or backend systems

  • Data analysis and visualization

  • Machine learning or AI

  • Computer vision

  • Scientific computing or simulations

  • Automation

  • APIs and data processing

  • IoT and hardware integration

3. Demo

Provide a short demonstration of your project.

This can be:

  • A video demo

  • A live demo link

  • Screenshots

  • A recorded walkthrough

  • A combination of these

Your demo should clearly show your project working and, where possible, demonstrate its environmental use case.

4. Source Code

Provide a link to your project's source code.

The repository should include a README explaining how to install, configure, and run the project.

5. Environmental Impact

Explain how your project could contribute to environmental sustainability.

Where possible, include measurable evidence such as:

  • Waste reduced or diverted

  • Energy saved

  • Water conserved

  • Emissions reduced

  • Resources optimized

  • Environmental conditions monitored

  • People reached or behavior changed

6. Technologies Used

List the major technologies, Python libraries, APIs, hardware, datasets, models, and services used in your project.

Important

Projects must be created for this hackathon and must comply with the hackathon rules and applicable laws. Participants are responsible for ensuring that any datasets, APIs, models, libraries, or other third-party resources they use are properly licensed.

    How well does the project work, and how effectively does the demo demonstrate its core features?

    How useful, accessible, scalable, and realistic would the project be in the real world?
